What to expect at one of my workshops

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at wire art and create something beautiful inspired by nature? My craft workshops are the perfect place to relax, learn new skills, and make your own unique wire art in a friendly setting with an experienced workshop tutor. They are beginner friendly, but with elements included to challenge those who might have more experience and want to expand their knowledge further. Whether you are a nature loving novice or a seasoned maker my workshops offer a great opportunity to explore how to make wire flowers, wire jewellery, and other lovely designs.
The workshop experience
I believe it’s important for you to leave a craft workshop with something that’s finished, that you can display, or use with pride, so that you leave with a real sense of achievement and a smile on your face. Seeing participants grow in confidence over the course of the day is a reward to me, as well as a benefit to you!
An experienced teacher
As well as having worked with wire for over twenty years, I have a degree in Embroidery and I’m an experienced craft workshop tutor, and have been running my own workshops at my studio since 2019. Backing that up I have over 15 years experience teaching English as a foreign language both in the UK and in Italy to a variety of students from small children right the way through to company directors! All of this means that I have a lot of experience of working with a variety of people and have learnt how to plan my teaching to suit different people, so that you can learn without feeling under pressure. It’s important to me that I give you the opportunity to work at your own pace, so that as well as reaching the end goal of a finished project, you also find the experience relaxing and mindful and leave inspired and confident to explore wire work, or other creative skills on your own.
What will I learn?
I teach a variety of wire work skills on each of my workshops. and also give guidance on design too. For example, on my wire jewellery workshop I teach you my signature wire stitching technique, alongside other techniques. On my embellished wire flower workshop, you learn several different ways to create wire flowers, as well as how to decorate your flowers in different ways with beads. On each workshop there are always a few techniques of varying difficulty for you to try, which means you can find a way of working that suits you, and come away with a completed project, whether that’s bunch of wire seed heads, wire flowers or a piece of wire art to display on the wall. See which workshops are currently available to book here.
What’s included?
All materials and use of tools is included on workshops at my studio, so you don’t need to bring anything other than your lunch! Whilst everything is provided, on some workshops you are welcome to bring things to personalise your wire work, perhaps leaves for inspiration from your garden, or beads if you have your own stash, I’ll always let you know in advance if this is relevant. Sometimes I have extra materials that you can buy from me if you want to continue making after the workshop.

A peek inside a typical workshop day
Once we’re all settled with a hot drink, all workshops start with a demonstration, where I’ll show you various techniques and tips to help you understand how to get the best out of the wire. For some workshops, for example, wire butterflies and insects, there are templates to follow (though you can always create your own with my guidance if you prefer) For some workshops there’s a printed sheet with helpful details, which will support you once you are ready to get making on your own.
Then you’ll work through the morning, trying out techniques at your own pace, with me coming around giving one to one help. You are never expected to remember everything that I’ve shown you in a demonstration, I’m always on hand to answer questions, and it’s only through trying things out yourself that you will start to absorb and learn. There’s usually a second demonstration, teaching you further techniques that build on what you have already learnt, the demonstration might be before, or after, we stop for a lunch break. Then we work through the afternoon, stopping to refuel with hot drinks and homemade cake, before completing our projects. At the end of the day I usually take photos of your creations in my studio, where you can see behind the scenes and some of my work on display.
For workshops at my studio* there’ll be a maximum of ten people taking part, we usually sit around one big table, so it’s a sociable and friendly experience. There’s a relaxed atmosphere and you’ll find as the day goes by, and your confidence grows, that you’ll be able to help your neighbours out with the elements that you’ve mastered.
*I run workshops in other venues too (you can find a list of all current workshops on the Workshop FAQ page) they can differ slightly in terms of refreshments, timings of breaks, numbers taking part etc, so always read the workshop description when you book. However, the teaching and learning experience will be very much based on what I’ve described above.
Why Join a Workshop?
My wire workshops are a relaxing, enjoyable day spent with like minded people. Whether you come alone, or book with a good friend to spend time together, you’ll find a friendly atmosphere. You can also book workshops as gifts! Just choose the gift option when booking.
In our busy lives, taking some time out to switch off by doing something creative can help with our overall well being. The act of making can be mindful through steady repetitive actions which require our full attention, blocking out other thoughts and giving ourselves a break from everyday life.
Managing to master the challenge of new skills to complete a creative project can build confidence, and inspire you to add more creativity into your life.
Testimonial
"I attended Judith’s wire seed heads workshop and had a fabulous day. Judith is an excellent teacher and planned the day so that in the morning we produced some basic wire seed heads. Then after lunch we built on the skills we had learnt in the morning and produced seed heads which were more complex. I was very impressed with the fact that I went home with a bunch of wire seed heads which were varied, interesting and life like. Judith was always available to help with individual challenges. And there was also cake in the afternoon, which was a bonus! It was a very enjoyable and productive day"
